Does the bride have to say "obey"?

In a civil Australian marriage, the bride must legally say,

"I ask everyone here to witness that I, take you, to be my lawful wedded husband"
or words to that effect.

The word "obey" is not required at all, much to the relief of many brides. Your local marriage celebrant will be able to offer you assistance in creating vows which are legal and meaningful to you.
