Can you have a male bridesmaid?

In 2025, weddings are more inclusive and reflective of the couple's relationships and friendships.

The traditional roles of bridesmaids and groomsmen are evolving, allowing for a more personalised and meaningful celebration.

If one of your best friends is male, can they still be a bridesmaid? The answer is, of course. You can have anyone you choose be your bridesmaid. There are possibly better terms to use than bridesmaid, such as bridesman, or man of honour. Or why not just ditch the genders for the whole wedding party , and call them wedding attendants, I Do crew, wedding posse, or commitment crew?

Mackenzie and Damon chose their best friends to stand by their side, regardless of gender. Mackenzie's Team Bride included Emily, Lauren, and Zak, while Damon's Team Groom featured Neville, Bailey, and Tannah.

The gals donned fit and flare silky dresses in burnt orange, while the guys looked dapper in all black. The result? A visually stunning and harmonious ensemble that exemplified unity and friendship.

Elopement at City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane

Karlee and Tristan wanted their marriage ceremony to be just about the two of them, so they planned an intimate elopement with just two special witnesses in the City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane.

The couple chose a timber arbour with double draping in white and burgundy, adorned with proteas. This was set up in front of the fountain by Miss Weddings. The proteas matched the bouquet which was beautifully arranged by Capalaba Carnations, who also created a simple bouttoniere for groom, Tristan.

Tristan arrived at the ceremony space with his best man/witness, and they both looked dapper in suits and shiny shoes. Tristan also brought along Karlee’s favourite scented candle from Glasshouse candles, and the delicious scent wafted through the ceremony area. Tristan and Jordan waited eagerly at the arbour for the bride to arrive.

Karlee and her maid of honour/witness, Morgane, were dropped at Government house and made their way down the stairs into the Botanic Gardens. Morgane wore a slinky navy dress, matching with best man, Jordan’s, navy suit. Karlee looked absolutely striking, wearing a midi length fit and flare Aje dress with pearl adornments. Her short, dark hair was curled in a cute Parisian bob, and her lips were painted crimson red. A white veil topped off her very chic look.

Their ceremony celebrated the couple’s story and life together so far, and the couple made their own tender vows to each other, before topping their ceremony off with an enthusiastic kiss.

After some photos around the gardens, the couple were joined by their clans for some family portraits. They later celebrated with a pint or two at Felons Brewing, at Howard Smith Wharves.

Fairytale wedding at Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mount Coot-tha

With their facial piercings and tattoos, Angel and Sebastien don't look like the most conventional couple. But when it came to their wedding day, they wanted the fairy tale wedding, with a white dress and a veil (and black lipstick) and flowers.

They contacted the team at Elope Brisbane to make it happen for them with minimal fuss and outlay.

Miss Weddings set up a timber arbour with white draping, white flowers and green foliage in the Palm Tree Lawn at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. White Americana chairs were set out for their guests.

Angel was proudly walked down the aisle with her mum and her grandmother. The three bridesmaids wore dusty mauve and olive green. Sebastien was waiting at the end of the aisle with his best gals, Darsey and Shekinah.

Angel and Sebastien have found such unconditional love with each other, and this was reflected in the beautiful vows they made to each other.

After a few photos around the gardens, the couple joined their guests at a celebratory dinner.

Garden wedding at Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha

 A and B's vision for their wedding was for a quiet, intimate and low key morning event.

They contacted the team at Elope Brisbane to coordinate the day for them.

The couple chose jewel colours - rich, darker tones, for their wedding colours, with B wearing a green linen shirt, and A sewing her own purple wedding dress.

They arrived together at the Botanic Gardens, and walked hand in hand into their wedding ceremony together, to a song from the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack.

They invited just four guests to share the day with them, who each played a special role in the ceremony, being witnesses to the marriage, and bringing forth ribbons to lay across the couple's entwined hands.

First, I placed a plain linen ribbon across the couple's hands, representing the blank slate which is each new morning and each new challenge. Next, A's friend brought forward a rich, green velvet cord, representing the continual growth of both parties to the marriage. Thirdly, B's friend brought forward a gold filigree chain, representing ongoing joy and prosperity for the marriage.

A plans to sew the three fabrics together, embroidering a new scene on the linen ribbon each anniversary. What a creative idea!

After the ceremony, the couple drank from a Celtic Quaich - a small silver cup, representing their trust for each other.

Lukas and Brittanie wanted a leafy, modern garden wedding, full of fun for their friends and families. They booked the team at Elope Brisbane to bring it all together for them.

The team from Miss Weddings had set up a timber arbour, draped with pale blue fabric, and decorated with florals and foliage.

The ceremony started with Lukas and his groomsmen walking into the ceremony space to “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King. The groomsmen all wore shirts in varying shades of light blue and took a seat in the front row.

Team Brittanie then walked down the aisle to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Kina Grannis. First was Brittanie’s friend as “Flower Woman”, then four bridesmaids dressed in shades of light blue, then Brittanie’s friend, Brad, as Man of Honour in a light blue shirt. Team Brittanie also had seats reserved in the front two rows of the right side of the ceremony space.

Brittanie walked down the aisle in a pretty white lace dress, wearing a flower crown atop her curled hair.

With just Lukas and Brittanie standing under the arbour, the couple read their vows to each other from little vow books which they had written themselves. The vows were very personal and sweet, and will be remembered by them forever.

After the ceremony, some fun snaps to remember the day were captured by photographer Romana. The couple and their guests headed off to Club Parkwood for their reception.

Brittanie gave a five star review, "Cheryl did an absolutely amazing job. She was so well spoken and made our ceremony run smoothly. She is the best person for the job."

Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha is a shady and tranquil wedding location close to the centre of Brisbane. There are three ceremony areas that can be booked. This photo shows the popular Palm Tree Lawn, which is a small, private area overlooking a pond.

The lawn can be booked for weddings at a cost of $185.90 per hour, with a minimum of two hour hire fee.
