The Southern Moreton Bay Islands offer a unique lifestyle in
South East Queensland, with an emphasis on community, living life at a slower
pace, and fishing.
The four Bay Islands, Russell Island, Karragarra Island,
Lamb Island, and Macleay Island, are accessible by water taxi from the Banana
Street Wharf at the Redland Bay Marina. The adult fare is currently $9.60 each
way for those who are wondering.
T & L live on Russell Island with their children, and
decided they had waited long enough to be married. Their wedding planning, like
most events on the Island, was a community project, with friends and neighbours
pitching in to organise transport, music, and decorations. The ceremony was
held on the verandah of the local RSL Club, with the locals all dressing up and
turning up with a commitment to celebrate.
The children of the couple formed the wedding party, and in
true island style, wore Hawaiian shirts and tropical print sarongs.
I had to dash for the water taxi back to the mainland, but I
believe there was Karaoke and a mighty good time had until the late hours.
